ABOUT THE TOUR

1. The Shunkaen Bonsai Museum is managed by Kunio Kobayashi, who has been named the top bonsai master in Japan four times.
2. There are three tea rooms in the traditional Japanese house on site. Enjoy an authentic tea ceremony and kimono experience.
3. After observing the meticulous preparations for the tea ceremony, participants will be provided a cup of matcha green tea and traditional dry sweets.
4. A variety of kimono are prepared for participants. Participants may take pictures with backdrops filled with Japanese scenery in the garden and the tokonoma alcove.

ITINERARY

Meet at the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum (5 min)

Please present your reservation confirmation sheet upon arrival at the location.
[Access to the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum] 1-29-16 Nihori, Edogawa-ku, Tokyo 5 minutes by taxi or 20 minutes on foot from Mizue Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line. 13 minutes by taxi from Koiwa Station on the JR Chuo-Sobu Line.
Those who arrive late for 10 minutes or more will have their reservations cancelled. Please leave plenty of time to reach the meeting location. The staff will be waiting for participants.
The staff can assist participants in Japanese or English. The English level of the staff is between beginner and intermediate.

Tea Ceremony Experience (30 min)

Observe a master conducting the preparations for an authentic tea ceremony in a traditional Japanese house within the museum. Participants who are interested may try their hand at preparing the tea themselves. Pictures may be taken as well.

Kimono Try-on Experience (40 min)

Staff will assist participants one at a time in putting on the kimono. Pictures with the kimono may be taken in front of the bonsai in the tokonoma alcove and outside in the garden, weather permitting. Pictures showing you in a kimono will make for great memories.
*A kimono with the correct height and waist size provided beforehand will be prepared. The kimono will be worn on top of participants’ normal clothing, so turtlenecks should be avoided to ensure that the kimono are shown off to their best advantage.

Garden Stroll (10 min)

Enjoy a stroll through a garden lined with first-rate bonsai. Many visitors come from all over the world to see the Shunkaen Bonsai Museum, run by the world-famous bonsai master Kunio Kobayashi. Visitors may also take pictures.

Tour ends at Shunkaen Bonsai Museum (5 min)

Participants may leave at any time after they have changed back into their original clothes. Please head to your next destination on your own.

2. This is an unguided plan with no accompanying tour guide or tour conductor. The English level of the staff is between beginner and intermediate.

4. Kimono will be worn on top of clothing. Only the outer layer of clothing will be removed. Turtlenecks should be avoided to ensure that the kimono are shown off to their best advantage.

5. In poor weather, participants may not wear the kimono outside in the garden, but they may enjoy taking pictures inside, in front of the tokonoma alcove.
